The bathroom sink often smells, a real unpleasant smell, despite regular cleaning. Often the sink is slow to drain and, looking down the plug hole, something could be seen to be partially blocking it. The sink drain is a right dog’s dinner and has been ever since the build, having no fewer than six 90˚ elbows in a run of pipe that spans just 15ins and no waste trap. The pipe was removed to investigate. The fittings that connect to the sink and the hull fitting have o-rings and shouldn’t need any other type of seal, but they were found to have so much plumber’s sealant around them that the excess had squeezed out and was obstructing the pipe. Always the sign of an amateur. This, along with so many bends, was causing slow drainage and a build-up of a horrible, smelly gunge in the pipework.

A nearby Wickes was visited, new fittings and a proper waste trap were bought and a new run of pipework made. There is now a waste trap and just two 45˚ elbows in a straight run of pipe, with o-rings and no other sealant at the end fittings. Hopefully now the sink will drain quicker and not repeatedly smell.

In the afternoon we went for a walk around Diglis and the river, had a few pints sitting outside in the sunshine, in a pub overlooking the basin, before returning to the boat and a Sunday roast dinner.
