Contractors were working at the Graving Lock top gates, fitting a dam presumably
in preparation for repairing the sink hole at the foot of the lock.
We met with Mark and Jan and spent most of the afternoon in Chester
Cathedral refectory, catching up over lunch, cakes and coffee. We were
intrigued by the impressive modern stained glass window telling the story of
the Creation.
It was raining when we emerged from the Cathedral. Mark and Jan left
for the Park and Ride and, on the way back to the boat, we called into the 17th
Century Pied Bull Inn. The pub is a very atmospheric place housing its own
brewery.

My Great Great Grandfather died in 1885 and it was in this pub that an
inquest into his death was held. The inquest ruled that he died after a
‘visitation from God’, Victorian speak for Natural Causes. If only walls could
talk.
It was a dirty night of wind and rain.
