Waking early, the dog was walked and, leaving him on the boat, we
walked into Leek. Quite a long way from the boat. We were lucky enough to catch
Market Day although it was only a small market. We had breakfast in a high
street cafe, very enjoyable, and then explored the town.
Leek is very similar to Congleton and Macclesfield, also being a town
built on silk manufacturing, it gained a reputation for dyeing and embroidery.
Many of the buildings in the town are very grand and hint at the wealth of at
least the manufacturing barons. Leek also boasts the grandest war memorial in
Staffordshire and the tallest in the country, in the form of a clock tower that
dominates the end of the High Street.

We had hoped to visit Brindley Mill, a working corn mill built by
James Brindley in 1752 when he worked as a Millwright before becoming an eminent
Canal Engineer. However, it was 2 miles from the town centre and would not have
been open anyway. A shame but something for the future.
We walked back via Travis Perkins and Home and Bargains where we
bought items for more jobs and improvements on the boat.
