Friday 7th December 2018

It had rained heavily during the night with quite a bit of wind. It was due to continue into the day so we planned to leave the mooring about 10:30 for the 7 mile cruise to Market Bosworth where we are meeting Martin and Michelle.

By the time we left the rain had gone off and, although it was breezy on and off, there were clear blue skies and it turned out a lovely day.

Passing Stoke Golding where we may well spend Christmas, there are nice moorings on the off-side not far from the village. The Ashby meanders a lot, just over a mile distant you could see the canal but, with the course it takes it was over 3 miles by canal.

At Sutton Wharf we watered, dumped rubbish and emptied the loo. Continuing around Ambion Wood and passing under a disused railway, the canal passes close to the site of the Battle of Bosworth, where King Richard III was defeated and killed by Henry VII, the throne then passing from the Plantagenets to the Tudors. We have visited the site before but will do so again on the return journey.

We arrived at Market Bosworth and were lucky enough to moor right at the end of the hard-standing on the towpath. There is a marina here now, that didn’t exist on our last visit. The entrance is located right on the winding hole and they charge £5 per night mooring on the towpath either side of the entrance.

We walked to Market Bosworth. At just over a mile, it is a long way for a pint or too much shopping. The village is a lovely little place although busy with traffic and hard to get a decent angle to take any photos because of all the parked cars. A lot of history here though.

Weather: a lovely day, a bit breezy at times.
