Brenda went into the city first thing to buy a few things she had seen while I got the boat ready to move.

On Brenda’s return we visited a Latvian/Lithuanian food shop in the basin. They have some gorgeous, imported foodstuffs. The smoked mackerel is to die for.

We then left the basin, watered just outside and left Coventry. We were not sad to see it slip away behind us although, having said that, we will probably return over the winter.

We cruised up to Hawkesbury Junction, having a fouled propeller twice, although it cleared by running astern. All manner of things thrown into a canal can become wrapped around the propeller. Worst case scenario, you have to put your hand through the weed-hatch, into the water and clear the obstruction although, if you are lucky, bursts of running astern can clear it.

We moored just above Sutton Stop Lock. Just as we moored the fuel boat “Callisto” was delivering to the permanently moored boats here. We took diesel and coal off him which worked out very much cheaper than fuel out of a marina. 90p per litre for diesel and £11 for a 25kg bag of Excel coal. We have decided to stick with the Excel as it seems to burn so much better.

We went off to the Greyhound for a few pints. Only 5 miles from Coventry but such a warm, friendly pub. Talking to older, Coventry born locals, they all lament the demise of their city and what it has become.

Back on board Brenda concocted our fish curry, with a little help. It was absolutely beautiful.
