We both had busy days today. After breakfast Brenda did housework
while I painted the black stripes on the boat hook and touched up the
blackening on the port side. The blackening hadn’t been done since passing
through Braunston and Blisworth tunnels and badly needed doing.
Once this was done, the boat was turned so the starboard side could be
done. Brenda went shopping. This side was so bad that some parts had been
rubbed down to metal so had to be primed first. It then came on to rain so the
blackening still has yet to be done. In the meantime, the hull is full of grey
patches.
The roof vents and chimney flue bands were polished although the
chrome on the flue bands is flaking off, after just a few weeks of use. The
side fenders were re-spliced and the karabiners covered with cut-offs from a
bike inner tube as they tend to scrape the side.
My toolbox is kept in the engine room and was found with ½inch
of water in the bottom as well of a small amount of water in the engine room
itself. Hopefully it was found in time and the tools adequately dried out. It
seems the drain for the weedhatch cover blocks with dead leaves and other crap,
the drain channel then overflows into the engine room. There is not a lot to be
done about this other than to ensure the channel and drain is clear whenever it
rains.
Harvey was showered ready for clipping tomorrow. It really is not easy
trying to wash him in the shower. Brenda started his trim with scissors.
Always, after initially struggling once his clipping starts, Harvey becomes
resigned to the outcome and just lets you get on with it.
Late afternoon it absolutely hammered down with rain and hail. This is
another problem that is starting to manifest itself. The sliding hatch above
the rear doors is becoming very hard to slide and needs investigating. Also
when it does rain for any amount of time, drips of water appear around the
hatch woodwork inside the boat. This we cannot have but to investigate and sort
the problem, the hatch has to be removed. No easy task and perhaps not wise to
start in the winter.
