We had noticed, when we were on the Erewash Canal, that autumn had
arrived. We noticed it first in the colour of the leaves on the Chestnut trees.
Although we had back to back heat this year the weather seemed to have broken,
as usual, when the schools broke up and really, it hasn’t returned. The last
few days have been very windy and today, gales, the boat has been banging
against the pontoons all through the night and day.
The door between saloon and alleyway was removed and the top corner
cut off, this should now stop it sticking. It has been an intermittent fault
with the boat twisting. The rear door frames and the wooden panels on the doors
themselves, have been sealed and can now, along with the other doors, be
varnished prior to the winter. It is a job that has been waiting for many weeks
and was a good one to get out of the way.
Brenda walked into Long Eaton, more for a break than anything, and has
made an appointment to have her hair done tomorrow.

Alex said the batteries would not be delivered until about 4pm which
wouldn’t leave enough daylight to get the job done. He asks that we move to the
pier outside his workshop by 10am tomorrow. Just as well it wasn’t today, the
wind is that fierce it would not be possible.
We walked up into Long Eaton and partook of the Nags Head. It is a
very busy road. It’s surprising how quickly you get used to the peace and quiet
of the canals and how much noise is an intrusion.
